Pray Like a Pirate
I absolutely love learning about how other people pray. It’s a pretty self-serving activity, actually, because I often borrow (read: steal) ideas from what’s working for other people and apply them to my own life. Recently, I was reminded of the “ARRR” or “pray like a pirate” structure for prayer. It goes as follows: Acknowledge: How do you feel? What thoughts and emotions are coming up? It helps me to really name the emotions: “tired, excited, fearful, hopeful, anxious, confused” etc. Take a moment to pause and acknowledge not only how you’re feeling, but also the reality that the Lord is present to you here and now, and He wants to know everything. Relate: Share your feelings (acknowledged above) with the Lord. Receive: Allow the Lord to respond to these feelings. Sometimes I receive consolation, or I’ll feel Him directing me to scripture or a song or a prayer. Write these things down! If you don’t feel like anything is happening, just wait. Give this at least a few minutes of silence to allow Him to speak to you. This is a conversation, so go back and forth with Him. Ask Him questions, push for more, and be open and honest. Respond Thank the Lord for His goodness, for whatever He has shared with you in this time of prayer. I like to pray an Our Father in gratitude for Him. Praying like a pirate over the past few weeks has been revolutionary. I’ve felt my prayer time get much deeper, much more quickly because I’m actually pausing to allow Him to get into my heart and speak to me, by stopping long enough to name how I feel. Maybe give ARRR a try this week! And let me know how it goes for you 🙂 In Christ, Jane What I’m Loving Lately Happy St. Therese Feast Day!! It’s the feast day of our favorite girl, St. Therese, who has taught me so much about confidence, trust, littleness, and love. For a primer, or reminder, on her “little way,” I recommend this Apostolic Exhortation from Pope Francis called “C’est la Confiance!” It’s a 20-minute read and a great way to dive into her theology today 🙂 Also, I hope all of you who prayed the novena receive the roses you prayed for – and if not, keep your eyes peeled for how she’s inevitably working on your behalf today! God wants you to rest I’ve been chatting about leisure quite a bit this week, and this video gives a gorgeous overview of the importance of rest and leisure! |
This movedddd my heart this week: “He will provide the way and the means, such as you could never have imagined. Leave it all to Him, let go of yourself, lose yourself on the Cross, and you will find yourself entirely.” St. Catherine of Siena Let me pray for you during my marathon!!! I want to offer every mile of my marathon up for a prayer intention (let’s put this suffering to good use) so please let me know how I can pray for you, and if there’s a particular mile number (1-26.2) you’d like to nab 🙂 And please pray for my taper weeks! Big fan of New Hampshire I went to the gorgeous wedding of my friend Bridget and her new husband Paul this weekend! The reception was in her cousin’s backyard on a pond, and there were phenomenal campout vibes! Please pray for Bridget and Phil and their marriage! |
